Houston-based artist Francesca Fuchs' first exhibition at Talley Dunn Gallery, Paintings of Paintings showcases exactly what the title portrays: paintings of paintings.
Except in this case, the works, featuring layered washes of acrylic on canvas, are not so straightforward and accessible, as the title might suggest. Inspired from the artworks in her own home or those purchased from junk shops, Fuchs’ paintings render the original pieces in her own pastel color palette with loose brushwork.
Also on view is new work by celebrated photographer Nic Nicosia. Recognized for his groundbreaking, staged photographs from the 1980s, this new body of images presented within dreams and other stories records another step within the artist’s exploration of visual experience. Dreams and other stories is comprised of seven series of images that explore the interplay of objects culled from the artist’s dreams and everyday experience. In each work presented, the artist creates a narrative with the juxtaposition of seemingly unrelated shapes and objects to explore their visual and psychological relationships. Within these narratives, Nicosia reflects upon experiences in his own life through the arrangement of forms and imagery, such as basic shapes, bodies and plant forms.
Both exhibits open with an artists' reception on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 6PM to 8PM.
