Founders Maxime Blandin and Dillon Baxter
On a mission to make an impact with his carbon footprint and initiative, PlantSwitch was born. Maxime Blandin, the co-founder of the sustainable products company, has quickly become a thought leader in the sustainability industry. The company offers an alternative to single-use plastic products— biodegradable straws and cutlery made with upcycled agave.
As the co-founder of PlantSwitch, what inspired you to launch your business?
After researching environmental substitutes to single-use plastic, we noticed the lack of alternatives that are degrading after use. We wanted to start a business that manufactured and distributed truly eco-friendly alternatives. Our products are uniquely designed to degrade with or without oxygen, an ideal match for any environment. Our goal is to do sustainability the right way here at PlantSwitch, which separates us from everyone else.
PlantSwitch has created sustainable cutlery and straws that can biodegrade in any environment.
Why is sustainability so important to you?
Growing up in the Caribbean, I have witnessed firsthand how destructive microplastic is for marine life. Even something as small as a straw sits around in our world centuries after we use it, and to think of all the waste our population creates each day has motivated me to create a solution that is accessible to everyone. We have only one planet, and it is our generation’s job to undo the mess that we, and past generations, have created.
As a thought leader in the sustainability industry, what advice would you give to those aspiring to open a sustainable business upon graduation?
Take time to learn the science behind sustainability. There is a lot of greenwashing out there, and if you have the knowledge, you will understand how much of a difference you can make. Your carbon footprint is very important, and using products made out of certain plants can help offset that. Even the smallest switches can make a large difference.
Tell us a bit about your philanthropic efforts.
Part of Foundation Claude Emmanuel Blandin, a foundation started by my father and uncles, has a focus on education and science in the Caribbean that helps young entrepreneurs learn and achieve their goals.
