Martyn Lawrence Bullard’s historic home in Los Angeles is what color dreams are made of.
Tell me about the inspiration behindStar Style.
Star Style celebrates the last ten years of my Career. It highlights the celebrity homes that have been such an important part of my becoming a brand in the design world, as well as the celebrities who have allowed me to design for them and work with their styles and personalities to create such individual homes. It was also released to mark my 30th anniversary in this industry.
The lauded designer will be hitting the stage at the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas, on Nov. 15 for FGI’s Night of Stars gala.
What are you most looking forward to at FGI’s Night of Stars gala?
I am so very honored to be a part of this gala, the night of stars, to be considered one of the stars, and to be honored with such a group of exceptional talent; it’s beyond. I also love to be in Dallas; it’s one of my favorite cities, and I always feel so welcomed there. I have great friends I will see, and I will take time to visit all my favorite design stores.
What are your go-to spots when you’re in Dallas/Texas?
I always hit the design district. Michelle Nusbaumer’s amazing Ceylon et cie is an emporium of wonder; I love Art of India for its exotic furnishings and James showroom for excellent designer fabrics. I love eating dinner at Le Bilbouqiet in Highland Park and accessories shopping at Grange Hall. Stanley Korshak is a must-see, and their sophisticated buy-and-chic selection is always inspiring and a little too tempting for a fashionista like me.
How do you source your inspiration as it pertains to design?
My inspiration comes from all over the world, it is fueled by my travels and all the wonderful places, people, and sights I get to experience. Inspiration is all around us, so it’s important to stay open, allow all to soak in, and always opt for adventure, as it will constantly be a source of wonder and inspire your future work and world.
Is there a project or job at the top of your mind as one of your most fulfilling projects?
Recently, I loved my RuPaul project. It was amazing to design a home for the world’s most famous drag queen and run wild with his requests for a Hollywood regency vibe that captured the golden age of Hollywood and doubles as a playground, disco, filming backdrop, and a deeply comfortable yet dramatic home.
Anything you’re currently working on?
My current projects include homes for Pink, Machine Gun Kelly, Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, Gwen Stefani, Blake Shelton, and Cardi B, plus a new Restuarant ‘Red O, ‘for master chef Rick Bayless and the award-winning Checker Hall Restuarant in Los Angeles.
