Local artist and mixed media maven LaToya Jones gives us an inside look at her showstopping collaboration with The Ritz-Carlton, Las Colinas.

Let’s start at the beginning. Can you tell us about your artistic background and what initially drew you to mixed media?

I have always had a love for art, specifically color and texture. Art has been a constant in my life, in school, it was always my favorite subject. And I have always used it throughout my life as a means of expression and relaxation. When I discovered mixed media, it felt like a whole new world opened up. I love the freedom it gives me to layer different materials, textures, and colors, creating pieces that feel alive and full of depth. I try to make sure each piece tells its own story by blending influences and emotions in a way that feels personal and meaningful. I put my heart into every artwork, hoping it connects with others on an emotional level.

What are some common themes or techniques that run throughout your work?

In my work, I love to play with layering different textures and materials. Each layer tells a part of a story, representing the different paths we all take in life. Whether it’s a bold splash of color or a rough, natural texture, every piece has a purpose, coming together to create something meaningful. I hope that when people see my art, they feel encouraged to explore and discover the beauty in each detail. It’s all about inviting them on their own journey through the work I’ve created.

Congratulations on your dazzling collaboration with The Ritz-Carlton, Las Colinas! What can you share with us about your “Above & Beyond the Extraordinary” collection?

I was really excited about my collaboration with The Ritz-Carlton, Las Colinas and my “Above and Beyond the Extraordinary” collection! The Ritz Carlton has been a great partner of mine for many years, and the team is always a pleasure to work with. This project was a fun adventure for me, inspired by a simple question: “What If?” What if diamonds weren’t just pretty stones? What if they could become colorful paints that sparkle with the energy of the Earth? What if our canvases could reach all the way into space, and our paintbrushes were made from the light of stars?

In this dream world, art has no limits. It is as big and bright as our imaginations! I imagined painting not just with regular colors, but with the light from far away suns, creating beautiful pieces that feel full of energy. With “Above and Beyond the Extraordinary,” I wanted to invite everyone to think beyond what they know and let their imaginations run wild. My hope is to help people dream big and see the beauty in the world around them!

I used this event to highlight my most recent collection, “Royal People,” which is a collection that I’ve been working on literally and figuratively for many years. In this collection, what is unique is that it combines my passion of photography and painting.

Are there any specific pieces at the Ritz-Carlton, Las Colinas, that you would like to highlight?
