Julian Addo’s flair for hair blossomed from her days as a shampoo girl in New York City to full-on girl boss running her own company, Dallas-based Adwoa Beauty (adwoabeauty.com). Here, we chat with the beauty guru about her business inspiration, holy grail products and more.
Dallas-based Adwoa Beauty is revolutionizing the natural haircare movement.
What kickstarted your passion for hair?
My love for hairstyling began when I was growing up in New York City. I was surrounded by people who were passionate about hair. Everyone in my circle was a hairstylist or did hair at home, so soon enough, I found myself dabbling in the world of hairstyling. I went from being a shampoo girl to experimenting and styling my friends’ hair. Eventually, I decided to pursue it as a career and went to cosmetology school. I figured, why not turn my passion into a career and see where the road would take me? And I’ve been enjoying the journey ever since.
Tell us about the journey to launching Adwoa.
It all started back in 2012 when the natural hair movement exploded into popularity. As a seasoned cosmetologist, I jumped right in as a blogger and event producer and eventually turned my company, Bella Kinks, into a full-service marketing agency for textured haircare brands and influencers. However, after four years in the game, I still wasn’t satisfied with the products available on the market. There was a gaping hole where a luxury textured haircare brand should be, and I couldn’t find anything that met my vision for what that should look like, so I decided to take matters into my own hands.
What are your staple haircare products?
Honestly, all of the products in the Adwoa Beauty assortment are staples for me, but on a weekly basis as I’ve been trying to grow out my hair, the baomint collection has been giving me everything. My holy grails are the baomint shampoo, deep treatment, leave-in styler, gel and oil blend.

Any trends you’re seeing in the industry?
The beauty industry is rapidly changing more than ever, but right now, the appetite for clean ingredients and transparency in product formations is the strongest it’s ever been. People want to know what they’re putting on their bodies, and rightfully so!
Fave Dallas beauty spots?
Mara’s Med Spa always keeps me coming back, and the nail salon at Melrose Nail Bar is the only one I trust with my nails.
Lastly, what’s next?
The future is looking bright! We’re always pushing ourselves to new heights, and there’s no slowing us down. We’re focused on expanding our brand globally and bringing our products to even more people around the world. We never want to sell our users something they don’t need, so we’re constantly brainstorming something new into the space. We’ve got some exciting things coming down the pipeline, so stay tuned!
