Builder Jennifer Duncan believes your home should feel like a vacation. Which is why two of her favorites places to visit—the Montage hotel in Laguna Beach and the classic architecture of the Hamptons—were inspiration for the Cape Cod-style home she built with architect Lloyd Lumpkins in the heart of Highland Park. Melding their styles—his, truer to architecture and period; hers, a little more transitional—the pair created a tranquil in-town retreat, located at 4337 Westway Ave.

Among the unique features of the 8,850-square-foot abode is the cedar shake siding, an idea Duncan brought back from California. As it’s rare to the Dallas area, she did extensive research (including days in her front yard testing stains) to find the perfect color. But the attention to detail didn’t stop there. She took her crew to the Montage to see firsthand how the trim married up with the siding. “The supplier set us up to visit other homes that were under construction so we could view the product being installed,” she says. Lumpkins, who immersed himself in research on Hamptons homes, made sure the house was designed in the historically correct style. Case in point: the perfectly curved gambrel roofs.

The double lot is also a selling point.
