Grace González was born into a family of master tequila distillers. In fact, she represents the fourth generation of one of Mexico’s most reputable tequila distillation families – one that has used the same award-winning handcrafted techniques for more than 150 years.
But that doesn’t mean she didn’t need to earn her stripes.
Grace worked her way up the ranks from the warehouse to a certified spirits sommelier specializing in tequila. With an impeccable palette and an intimate knowledge of the spirit under her belt, she has quickly become the face of their premium tequila brand, El Mayor.
This fall, El Mayor released a limited-edition Rum Cask Finish Extra Añejo. Aged in bourbon barrels for three-and-a-half years and finished in Agricole Rum Casks, this expression boasts an elegant golden amber color and a rich flavor profile.
So we sat down with Grace to learn more about this exquisite tequila and the González family tequila legacy.
Before we dive into the Rum Cask Finish, let’s talk a little bit about what it’s been like to grow up in a family of master distillers.
Sure thing. As you know, our family has been mastering tequila distillation for four generations. I am the first woman in our family to take on a distiller role.
Wow.
But to answer your question, our father is heavily involved in the tequila-making process. He oversees every drop that leaves the facility and wants the next generation to have that same standard. To become a distiller in our family, our father has one rule – you have to work in all the roles to get a sense of the whole process. I’m so happy that I did it, and I love knowing about every part of bringing our tequilas to life.
That’s an incredible way to learn about tequila.
It sure is.
So, tell us what your responsibilities are now for El Mayor.
Currently I’m operating in the U.S. as a brand ambassador. I host exclusive tastings and I teach people about the complexity of tequila. I also help introduce our limited-edition expressions across markets. It’s a really rewarding experience.
Speaking of, tell us about your newest limited-edition expression.
Of course. The Rum Cask Finish is a special finishing process we’ve used on our Extra Añejo tequila, which is made from 100% Blue Weber agave, hand-harvested using traditional processes and then aged for over three-and-a-half years.
Finishing in the rum casks imparts a medley of flavors into the Extra Añejo – vanilla, nutmeg and spice on the nose and a full-bodied caramel taste.
That sounds divine. Where can we get it?
It is a limited-edition run, so you’ll want to get it quickly if you want it to be a part of your collection. You should be able to purchase from your local purveyor of fine spirits, or you can order online through the Cask Cartel link on our website.
