Wealth management means so much more than merely managing the market these days. From financial advisors to curators for your collections, here are the pros you need to know now.
Joyce Goss
Hailed as one of the world’s most dynamic and forward-thinking auction houses, Goss joins Phillips as its first regional director for Texas.
THE WHO
Stepping into her new role as regional director, Texas at Phillips auction house (phillips.com), Joyce Goss knows a thing or two about the ever-evolving art space. “Phillips was looking to expand to Texas and they asked several of the top collectors in Dallas for referrals; luckily my name was included. Additionally, because of my role at The Goss-Michael Foundation, I knew several of the senior managers in New York and London,” notes Goss. “Fortunately, it was the right fit considering my work with GMF, board involvement with museums and other organizations including UNICEF and The Family Place, and my relationships locally and internationally.”
THE WHY
“Phillips recognized the need for representation in Dallas since the participation from Texas has been remarkable in recent years,” shares Goss. “The incredible activity from museum shows, the new galleries coming to the city, a vibrant art fair and of course the extraordinary collectors in the area have contributed to the growth in Texas. Continued interest in contemporary art, design and watches are trending, and we are finding collectors are in love with more than one category.”
THE TAKEAWAY
“Investing in art is a bit different than traditional investments as it combines the emotional value with the commercial value,” shares Goss. “Do your research. Visit auction house websites, visit galleries and museums, establish relationships with your local curators, figure out what piques your interest, and then, most importantly, buy what you love.”
Robbie Briggs
Robbie Briggs leads the charge for the number-one luxury brokerage in Texas.
THE WHO
President and CEO of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s International Realty (briggsfreeman.com) Robbie Briggs is no stranger to spotting trends far ahead of the gate. With over 40 years of real estate experience, Briggs has the eye of an eagle and always seems to know what’s next. “The top must-have is still a great outdoor living room, usually covered, with a TV, fireplace and outdoor kitchen, all just steps away from a swimming pool and whirlpool. Home theaters or a media room are musts too,” shares Briggs. “But home offices are right up there now—often two offices, for two breadwinners—thanks to more people working from home.”
THE WHY
“Our buyers are looking for systems to make everything easy: appcontrolled lighting, security and audiovisual systems for indoors and out. Electric-car charging stations have become much more important. In high-rises, private dog parks and dog-washing rooms are big,” notes Briggs as it pertains to what’s top of mind. “And this may be a surprise to many, but we’re seeing a return to what one of our agents calls ‘the classics’: homes that are smaller on their lots, with moldings in the rooms again, French doors everywhere and antique fixtures. The sleek, white, boxy houses we’ve been seeing are about to get some competition.”
THE TAKEAWAY
“Our brokerage president, Russ Anderson, is a big wine connoisseur. He has really illuminated us about great wines and how to care for them. Because wines and spirits have become so collectible for so many—not only to enjoy, but also as remarkably solid investments—the value of a beautiful, functional wine room has gone up too,” explains Briggs. “Wine collecting is a growing hobby—one that can actually pay off. Think of a proper wine room as a bank vault for your money.”
Charmaine Tang
For over 25 years prior to joining ORCA, Charmaine Tang was a private banker and investment banker at global financial services first, including J.P. Morgan, BNY Mellon and Morgan Stanley.
THE WHO
Having recently taken on the role as President, USA for ORCA (withorca.com), Charmaine Tang has hit the ground running. With over 25 years of experience, Tang joined the Swiss-based software and services company this fall as the first American on the team. “When I first saw ORCA, I fell in love (and simultaneously fell out of my chair),” recalls Tang. “ORCA’s security ensures our clients’ information is absolutely private and on a zero-knowledge cloud in Swiss digital vaults, which ensures only our clients can access their data. Our blockchain-based immutable log provides additional security and accountability.”
THE WHY
“Privacy, safety and security are the numberone priorities for the wealth and asset management industry,” explains Tang. “As companies, families and individuals continue to expand their global footprints, the complexity of assets and wealth is growing exponentially.” Another trend Tang has been seeing in wealth management: “Nonbankable assets as a significantly larger part of the overall asset allocation, reflecting personal interests while diversifying investment portfolios. More specifically, we are seeing more investments in individuals’ and families’ passions (i.e., aircraft, art, classic cars, collectibles, horses, jewelry, watches, yachts, etc.).”
THE TAKEAWAY
Notes Tang: “ORCA is forever transforming global wealth and asset management: everything from how wealth and asset owners and advisers store, analyze, share and communicate information to how wealth structuring, asset management, tax, compliance and succession planning are done, and beyond.”
David Blank
Launching its third expansion this year, Blank and The Diamond Factory team constantly strive to offer a one-of-a-kind experience.
THE WHO
As principal owner of The Diamond Factory (diamondfactorydallas.com), David Blank knows what his clients are looking for—and he knows that experience is one of the key tools to a sparkling success. “Everything is moving to an experiential economy, and individuals are prioritizing the experience. I thought, ‘Why not build a beautiful showroom onto the factory to showcase an industry that is shrouded in mystique and make the diamond-cutting process part of the retail experience?’” notes Blank of the newly expanded jewelry retail showroom. “Our diamond-cutting team is run by one of my partners, Ashley Van Creveld. He is a fifth-generation diamond cutter whose family has cut diamonds on three continents—originally from Amsterdam to South Africa, then England, and Ashley settled in Dallas 30 years ago,” Blank says. “We are grateful to have the maestro of diamond cutting right here in Dallas.”
THE WHY
“I’m sure you have heard the saying that every picture tells a story, and hearing a client’s personal story tells one too,” shares Blank regarding a treasured part of his client’s selection process. “There is a beautiful energy in hearing what inspired their particular desire… be it an engagement ring, a ‘push’ present, a birthday or anniversary, or sometimes a somber occasion like an inherited piece, that will spark beautiful memories forever. We are grateful to be chosen to be part of these memorable moments. It truly is so rewarding to work directly together with our clients to discover that perfect piece for them.”
THE TAKEAWAY
“There is a lot of consolidation going on in the industry, and family-run businesses are becoming more rare,” explains Blank. “One thing that will never change is the customer experience; our store embraces the ‘trusted adviser’ formula. Give trusting, genuine advice while serving a first-class, friendly customer experience to every client. We call it the DFX-Diamond Factory Experience. Thankfully our clients have really enjoyed the experience at the factory and our expanded showroom. We never stop evolving and bringing fresh new ideas, trends and the latest jewelry from all over the world.”
