Sol Society recently explored Mexico City on a weekend trip.
After a breakup, Dallas native Taylor Madison found herself alone on vacation at the uberchic Hotel San Cristóbal in Todos Santos, Mexico. Traveling solo had become familiar to Madison: She’d spent the four years prior globe-trotting with The Simple Sol (thesimplesol.com), her blog and travel consulting firm. “I was traveling the world and staying in the hotels of my dreams, but I was becoming numb,” says Madison. “I didn’t have a community.” Out of loneliness in Todos Santos came the idea for Sol Society, a network of travelers who gather for luxury vacations curated with intention. After accepting Sol Society applications online, Madison plays group-trip matchmaker, creating guest lists based on areas of interest and personality. Having traveled the world—everywhere from Botswana to Mustique—Madison has a keen sense of the traveler’s ebb and flow, with emphasis on detail. Afternoon tea in late designer Yves Saint Laurent’s Majorelle Garden in Marrakech? Check. Cowboy boot customizations before the Kacey Musgraves show in Austin? Been there, done that. Whether on a surf trip in Colombia or glamping in Big Sur, expect cultural experiences with a dash of luxury, like vintage car rides around town or meals in the home of a local chef. For Madison, it’s what happens after each trip that has made the experiences so special. “It’s been so powerful to cultivate friendships that outlast the destination,” she says.
