Stunning works by Salvador Dalí and Johannes Vermeer make a joint Dallas debut at the Meadows Museum.
Dalí’s “The Image Disappears” (1938)
Peep Meadows Museum’s stunning new exhibition as Salvador Dalí and Johannes Vermeer do Dallas like never before in Dalí/Vermeer: A Dialogue. Salvador Dalí’s “The Image Disappears” and Johannes Vermeer’s “Woman in Blue Reading a Letter” have taken up residence in the Meadows. Both paintings have traveled a long way for some Southern comfort, with Dalí’s piece coming in from the Fundacio Gala-Salvador Dalí in his hometown of Figueres, Spain, and Vermeer’s from the renowned Rijksmuseum in the Netherlands.
Vermeer’s “Woman in Blue Reading a Letter” (1663)
The two pieces are displayed side by side to best highlight and allow admirers to reflect on the influence the Dutch artist had on the Spaniard’s more surrealist approach. Dalí’s long obsession with Vermeer’s work is certainly no secret, but this display sheds a new light on the symbiotic relationship between the two paintings. It’s also worth mentioning that the Meadows is the first to host this thoughtful and unique display. The rare showing will be accompanied by a curated selection of Dalí prints from the Meadows’ permanent collection. Be sure to stop by for a reminder that we all draw inspiration from somewhere, even the greats.Through Jan. 15, 2023, 5900 Bishop Blvd., meadowsmuseumdallas.org
