Take a spin through the storied Bird Streets area and it is apparent that transition is the name of the game here. In fact, there is so much development happening that it seems there is a new build popping up in the blink of an eye. While this burgeoning city is no stranger to modernization—especially as it pertains to real estate—it is always a sigh of relief when you see a home stand the test of time. Cue this darling cottage that has been sitting pretty in the neighborhood since its original build in 1941.
When the new owner purchased the 2,500-squarefoot property, he knew that homes such as this tend to be a rarity—a true gem. Wanting to maintain as much of the original architecture and scale as possible, this bachelor enlisted the help of interiors firm Maestri Studio for a full-service revamp with keeping the integrity of the property top of mind.

“This project combines traditional architecture with masculine colors, patterns and details on the interior,” shares Janelle Burns at Maestri Studio. “This house was a full gut renovation down to the studs, which mostly followed the original layout and footprint of the house, with allowances made for switching up plumbing locations and a slightly expanded footprint in the primary bathroom.” Keeping the original character and rich history of the space intact, the design team worked diligently with the client to ensure the reimagined home still possessed that unique, timeless feeling.

“A lot of subtle details were carried out in the finishes and furnishings of this project. Examples include combining silk and velvet detailing on Roman shades, using two-tone (brass and brushed nickel) door hardware against black doors, brass detailing in the custom kitchen cabinetry and leather welt detailing on the custom pillows,” says Burns. “For every grand gesture you see, there are details when you zoom in closer.” Utilizing the original moldings and several interior touches, including the French doors and original crystal chandelier in the dining room, the home evokes a familiarity that lends itself to its historic surroundings.
