Best of Dallas: Style

The Editors with Rob Brinkley | December 27, 2016 | Feature Features

These are the people and businesses that made our city an exciting vibrant place to live. If this was last year, we can't wait to see what's in store for 2017.
Liz Thompson and Jackie Bolin met while Bolin was a morning news journalist and Thompson was a buyer for a local boutique.

The Style-Setters
This October, V.O.D. proprietors Jackie Bolin and Liz Thompson will cap off a decade of booming business with an anniversary party at Paris Fashion Week. After all, says Bolin with a laugh, “everyone always wants to come [to Paris] anyway!” Bolin was a fashion reporter at the Dallas Morning News when she met Thompson, a Los Angeles transplant with decades of experience in the fashion buiness. When they noticed a gap in the local retail market for cool small boutiques carrying indie brands and international labels, they banded together to fill it with R13 and Isabel Marant, thus cementing their status as Dallas’ best buyers. “The collections we’ve carried since day one are so much a part of our identity,” shares Bolin. They were the only boutique in Dallas to carry Marant for years. “When a shipment would come in, we used to call it ‘Marant Mania’—we could hardly tag it fast enough! People would fight over sizes and get upset with us if we didn’t hold pieces for them!” That kind of demand for a particular brand ensured their success during the 2008 financial crisis, when other small retailers could barely stay afloat. Mainstays like Marant, fellow Parisian Vanessa Bruno and denim brand R13 (fans are cultlike, says the duo) have made the Victory Park shop a customer favorite, while a constant sprinkling of hard-to-find exclusives like Au Jour Le Jour, Alexis Mabille and Christophe Lemaire have turned it into a veritable treasure trove of fun, quirky finds. But if you ask their most devoted customers what keeps them coming back to the neighborhood, it’s the sense of sisterhood. On any given afternoon, friends can pull up a chair and pick up store mascot Daphne (Bolin’s sweet Cavalier King Charles spaniel) as Thompson pairs Lisa Marie Fernandez bathing suits with Hacienda Montaecristo cover-ups for your upcoming trip. Bolin will order up Champagne (or french fries, if you’re so inclined) from the bartenders at the W Dallas Victory Hotel while playing retail therapist. It’s not just a store, you see, it's your second home--with a much better closet. 2418 Victory Park Lane, 214.754.0644
